South Africa hands global reputation assignment to H&K

South Africa has called in new PR counsel as it bids to sustain the global reputation uplift it experienced from last year’s successful staging of the Fifa World Cup.

The Holmes Report understands that Hill & Knowlton has been appointed by the country’s International Marketing Council (IMC), to oversee the global ‘Brand South Africa’ programme. The agency displaces incumbent MSLGroup Johannesburg, which won the £1 million account less than two years ago. Read the rest of this entry »

MSLGroup has unveiled a new initiative to centralise its global design and creative servicing at a new hub in India.

MSLGroup Creative+ will provide a range of services to support the Publicis Groupe agency’s worldwide creative needs, ranging from print collateral to digital development. Headed by MSLGroup India VP Pankaj Desai, the 24/7 Ahmedabad-based unit launches with 50 staffers after piloting a number of projects for the agency’s international clients. Analysis: Buyers remain cautious as agency M&A surges

If the headlines are anything to go by, mergers and acquisitions have well and truly returned to the agency world. Recent months have brought a lengthening roll-call of firms that have jettisoned their independence in favour of selling out to a network, casting the 2009 recession as a brief pause in the relentless pace of wheeling and dealing.

Amid the torrent of new deals, though, is enough evidence to suggest a lingering sense of caution on the part of buyers. Several independent agency sources contacted by the Holmes Report expressed disappointment with the terms of typical offers, posing a particular quandary for highly-rated firms that have waited for conditions to approach those that characterised the M&A market prior to the recession. Capital MSL wins lucrative global brief for Abu Dhabi energy giant

Capital MSL has been selected to lead global PR for Taqa, (the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company), following a keenly-contested review that featured some of the biggest agencies in the corporate and financial sector.

Capital takes charge of a seven-figure global brief that expands on its current mandate to manage investor relations for the energy conglomerate. The firm  will head an offering that draws on resources from the wider MSLGroup of agencies to service the account in key locations such as Abu Dhabi, London, Canada and the Netherlands. Freud and MWW buy back independence while holding companies up M&A plans

Two major PR agencies have bought themselves out of holding company ownership, even as a flurry of deals signal that acquisition is set to rise to pre-recession levels in 2011.

The UK’s Freud Communications is understood to have repurchased the 50.1 per stake in the company that has been owned by Publicis Groupe since 2005, according to a report in the Sunday Times. MSLGroup wins United Technologies global PR pitch

United Technologies Corporation (UTC), the giant US tech conglomerate, has selected MSLGroup to oversee a new global PR brief, following a keenly-contested review.

The Holmes Report understands that MSLGroup prevailed against a number of contending networks, including Porter Novelli, Burson-Marsteller and Ogilvy PR. Chinese PR giant urges independents not to sell to foreign agencies

As global PR networks continue to hoover up many of China’s best independent firms, the country’s biggest local agency has advised its peers to resist the temptation to sell.

BlueFocus PR president Peter Mao made the comments to the Holmes Report after his firm listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange earlier this year. Four years ago, BlueFocus was the focus of a major bidding war between several international agencies, before a mooted deal with Huntsworth Group eventually fell through.
