Qatar is to embark on a major global comms drive as competition for financial business heats up between rival cities in the Middle East.

The country has called in Citigate Dewe Rogerson to handle a lucrative global mandate, following a pitch that included several financial PR firms.

It is understood that Citigate has been tasked with driving awareness of the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC), the country’s financial hub that is designed to attract international financial services companies and MNCs. The brief is thought to span Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The QFC competes with similar entities within the Gulf including, most notably, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain. Outside the region, cities such as Mumbai and Singapore have emerged alongside traditional heavyweights New York, London and Hong Kong.

Sources said that the brief came with a “substantial” six-figure budget. It is believed that the QFC previously used several firms. Citigate is relatively unique among financial agencies, in that it has chosen to headquarter its Middle Eastern presence in Doha, rather than Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Representatives from Citigate Dewe Rogerson were unavailable for comment, while the Qatar Financial Centre Authority did not respond to request for comment.
