Cannes buzz preview

Next week I’ll be blogging and reporting from Cannes, where – for the second year – the annual advertising shindig includes a PR Lions category.

That is not my only reason for going – I’m also keen to get closer to some of the social media and digital trends that are being driven by the broader marketing community. And talk to the CMOs that, whether you like it or not, are largely responsible for these areas.

The PR industry remains something of a poor cousin at Cannes but, increasingly, the PR discipline is feted. A look at the seminar programme demonstrates that core PR values such as reputation, conversation and authenticity are leading the marketing agenda. It is a shame that the industry which specialises in these areas is less well-represented – with only Hill & Knowlton presenting at the event.

Porter-Novelli also has some interesting plans and, quite suitably, they involve social media. Specifically, the agency is listening to conversations around Cannes and making the data available over here. I’ll be publishing some of those metrics here as well as we try and analyse some of the trends emerging from the festival.

There will also be interviews and video as well, as often as I can post. In the week when Interpublic Group decided to set up a social media unit that does not involve any of its PR agencies, I think I should be able to ask some fairly uncomfortable questions…!
