Analysis: The case for content

If content is the answer to the PR industry’s never-ending quest for greater relevance, it might be worth asking exactly what the question was again. Much has been made of how brands must now entertain people if they are to build credibility and interest. Yet PR skills have always, to varying degrees, revolved around the need for an idea, and something interesting to say.

Looked at this way, even the simplest press release or investor statement becomes an exercise in content creation. It also explains why Cake Group head of planning Jim Dowling says that “content is nothing new”, while Frank PR MD Andrew Bloch admits that the area has a whiff of “emperor’s new clothes” about it.

And yet, something is brewing in terms of how brands are trying to engage and interact with their stakeholders, with very real implications for the PR industry’s ability to effectively take the lead in these areas. Read the rest of this entry »

Euro’s Salzman mulls continued role in wobbling Wyclef campaign

Euro RSCG PR North American president Marian Salzman has clarified reports that her agency has resigned its role on Wyclef Jean’s Haitian presidential campaign, saying that until the bid receives clearance from the Haitian electoral commission, no formal agency decisions can be made.

Salzman’s comments come after the Holmes Report last week revealed that Euro RSCG PR, together with sister agency Cake Group and political heavyweights New Partners, had been assembled to handle comms for Wyclef’s high-profile bid for the Haitian presidency. Salzman did confirm, though, that Euro had resigned its position as PR agency for Wyclef’s Yele Haiti NGO, which came in for considerable scrutiny from the New York Times over the weekend. Comms agencies await green light for Wyclef presidential bid

A roster of high-profile comms agencies has been assembled to work on hip-hop star Wyclef Jean’s Haitian presidential campaign, which may yet be derailed because of the country’s residency criteria.

Euro RSCG Worldwide PR is handling PR for the bid, alongside heavyweight political comms shop New Partners, which worked on Barack Obama’s successful US presidential campaign. Cake Group, the UK firm that is also owned by Euro RSCG parent Havas, is behind the campaign’s digital activity, including the Wyclef2010.com website. Read the rest of this entry »
